Business Networking Tips – Clear the Trees
The following is an excerpt from the upcoming book Face-to-Face Networking Skills
by Mindy Selinger
The majority of all the information & resources you need in order to be successful is within your reach, lurking in the background waiting to be discovered. There are times when we are so busy and focused on one component of our business that we ‘can’t see the forest for the trees’. A good PowerPartner looks out for you and recognizes opportunities, then shares them with you. They’re priceless. I know this from personal experience. Recently, one of my PowerPartners forwarded the email of a resource to me along with her thoughts on how I might use that resource. I knew about it. I had received the very same email earlier in the day. But at the time I was really busy. I had too many “trees” in front of me to see the application she saw. So I took action and had a HUGE result. I’m so happy and grateful that she took a quick moment to share the opportunity with me… A good PowerPartner looks out for you. You can find an excellent PowerPartner at your local Business Networking Groups.
Peter Shankman (of HARO) on the misuse of Facebook
This guy is great! I receive at least three emails a day from him, but I always read each one. (he has nearly 50,000 subscribers and an ‘open rate’ that is just to die for!) Peter Shankman, as described by PR Week Magazine is “redefining the art of networking”. Peter is hilarious… a skydiving social media addict and a marathon-running, hyper-active PR specialist. Peter is owned by two cats (NASA and Karma). He is the founder of HARO – Help A Reporter Out. HARO is an unique business networking website. HARO’s three daily emails contain queries from various media outlets looking for experts for their magazine, TV/Radios show, book, article, blog, etc. I have been quoted in a national magazine! I know lots of people who are experts in their field. I usually forward several queries every week. Some people I have forwarded to have actually made it to print! HARO fits so well in to the philosophy I teach; become a hub through which information flows. To start forwarding queries to the experts you know, subscribe to HARO today. Perhaps it will be their “big break”. Please follow his simple rules.
I wanted to share this article that Peter wrote on the misuse of Facebook invitations. Go to shankman.com to read the article. My thoughts exactly. Even though Facebook and LinkedIn are business networking sites. Being FB friends or LinkedIn Connections does not imply you want to be added to their marketing promotions. Half the time I am also on their email/announcement list, (How did that happen?) so the FB invites are duplicates. I’ll venture to say that this is happening with both FB and LinkedIn. Just recently I received this message on LinkedIn: “Would you please Vote for my Mom on the website below she has entered the Macy’s “I Believe” 2009 campaign competition, to win a trip to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!” Sorry…no. Enjoy HARO & the article!
