Seven years prior to the establishment of Meccano, Hornby applied for a patent he called “Improvements in Toy or Educational Devices for Children and Young People” which was consist of models of trucks, cranes, and other models drawn from from construction vehicles. Afterwards, Hornby change the name for his scale models as “Mechanics Made Easy.” This is the type of innovative idea Hornby products is famous for which also started a popular standard scale size for model trains.
Even during World War I, Meccano did not stop producing their popular model trains. Hornby has also introduced a new lineup of model train products which had clockwork motors imported from a German company called Marklin which also manufactured Meccano products under license in Germany. Only during World War II did production of Hornby model trains put to a stop. Only after the second world war did production resumed but production of model trains under the Meccano brand name stopped.
Hornby introduced 100-250 volts electric-powered model trains in 1925 which was soon downplayed to 6 volts DC to make it more safer. Production and introduction of a 00 scale, 12 volt DC model trains started in the 1930s and is now the most popular form of scale in the UK.
Popular railroading models from Hornby Railways are recognized as Lyddle End and Skaledale. While both have similarities when it comes to accessories, the Lyddle End has a scale of 1:76 which is a little bigger than the Skaledale. Both Lyddle End and Skaledale models are modeled after particular spots in England. These two villages in England have a picturesque scene of natural and man-made scenics.
The Hornby brand name is also common in many parts of the world namely Europe, North and South America, and Australia.
In the United States during the 1920’s, Hornby’s attempt to setup a factory was not as successful as other Hornby sites in Europe. Although, during the same era, a business venture aimed toward the US did not go fine for Hornby because of limited product attributes and the stock market crash of 1929.
